Dear Jameson and Addie,

Life is full of surprises—some good, some…well, let’s just say “character-building.” As your dad, it’s my job to help you navigate the twists, turns, and occasional potholes on this journey. And since I won’t always be there to hand you the right tool (or yell, “Use the wrench, not the hammer!”), I wanted to share these 10 life lessons I hope you’ll carry with you.

Think of this as your dad’s unofficial user manual—minus the warranty.

1. Success Is Built on Small, Boring Steps

You know those driveway basketball games and basement hockey practices? Those seemingly small moments are what greatness is built on. Show up every day, even when it’s not glamorous. Success doesn’t come in a flash—it’s pieced together, brick by brick.

2. Say “Thank You” (and Mean It)

Gratitude is your secret weapon in life. It opens doors, builds relationships, and makes you the kind of person people want to root for. Plus, it’s free. So, use it liberally.

3. Don’t Be Afraid to Be the Weird One

Life is way too short to blend in. Whether it’s your sense of humor, your interests, or the fact that you still talk to the dog as if he’s plotting world domination (which he might be), embrace it. The “cool kids” don’t change the world—the weird ones do.

4. Failure Is Not the Opposite of Success

Failure is your best teacher. It’s the feedback loop that makes you smarter, stronger, and more prepared for what’s next. So, when you mess up (because you will), own it, learn from it, and keep moving forward.

5. People Matter More Than Things

I know this sounds cheesy, but hear me out. The memories you’ll treasure most won’t involve the latest gadget or a fancy car. They’ll be the driveway games, late-night talks, and goofy inside jokes you share with people who matter. Prioritize those relationships.

6. Be Kind (Even When It’s Hard)

It’s easy to be kind to people who are nice to you. The real test is how you treat someone who isn’t. Choose kindness. It’ll cost you nothing but will mean everything to someone else.

7. Don’t Wait for Perfect Conditions

Spoiler alert: They don’t exist. If you’re waiting for the stars to align, the weather to clear, or Crosby to stop barking, you’ll be waiting forever. Start where you are, with what you have, and figure it out as you go.

8. Keep Your Word

Your word is your reputation. If you say you’ll do something, do it—even when it’s inconvenient. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about being dependable. (This also includes promises to clean your room, by the way.)

9. Money Isn’t Everything, but It’s Not Nothing Either

Learn how to manage your money early. Save for rainy days, invest in your future, and spend on what truly matters. But remember, no amount of money will ever replace the joy of a backyard game of catch—or the look on Crosby’s face when you drop a snack.

10. Always Believe in Yourself

You’re going to doubt yourself sometimes—that’s normal. But never let that doubt stop you from trying. You are capable of so much more than you realize, and no matter what, I believe in you. Always.

Life will throw a lot at you—curveballs, slapshots, and the occasional unexpected twist. But if you hold on to these lessons, I promise you’ll be ready for whatever comes your way.

And remember: no matter how old you get, how far you go, or how successful you become, you’ll always have a home here—with driveway basketball games, basement hockey tournaments, and a dad who loves you more than words can say.

Now, go out there and make me proud. (Just not too proud, or I’ll start crying, and that’s never a good look.)

Love,

Dad
